Eric Cortellessa is a Senior Political Correspondent at TIME, covering Donald Trump, national politics, and international affairs. At TIME, he has written more than a dozen cover stories, interviewed world leaders, and reported on the Jan. 6 Committee, the Israel-Hamas war, the MAGA movement, and Trump’s return to power and second term.
For his 2024 coverage of Trump, Eric won the National Press Club’s Sandy Hume Award for Excellence in Political Journalism. His reporting on former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan approving state contracts for his private real estate firm’s clients galvanized the state legislature to unanimously pass stronger new ethics laws requiring governors to place their holdings into a blind trust.
Eric was previously the Washington Monthly’s Investigative Editor, where he covered the 2020 election, the U.S. Postal Service and vote by mail, and federal antitrust policy. He regularly wrote book and film reviews for the magazine, as well as essays on American culture.
Eric’s writing has also appeared in the Washington Post, Slate, the New Republic, the Buffalo News, and elsewhere. He can be reached at: eric.cortellessa@time.com
